Most likely you will talk to a staffer. If possible, it is great if you can speak with the policy staffer on the topic you are calling about.
Be sure to call during normal business hours. Tell them who you are ( for example, “I am a social work student at the University of XXX and am requesting that Congressman or Senator _____ do _______because ______). It is important to say why you are calling and what issue you are calling about. It can help to write down a few talking points you will use in advance of the call so you can be as clear and concise as possible.
