We’ve already seen how ideas of “race” first emerged in 17th-century Virginia as a result of the rise of African slavery in the colony. By the beginning of the 19th century, ideas about racial difference were increasingly coming to be applied to Native Americans as well. How do the two sources we read this week treat the concept of “race?”
